Orientation is basically over. We had a nice dinner at town hall with all international students, with African music, dancing, awesome meat and after a few hours the tables were cleared to create some kind of dance floor. Of course they weren't used to us drinking so much so they ran out of beer in 2 hours, then out of wine and wodka, but atleast that gave Tony and me plenty of opportunity to reach our goal of having atleast 10 tequila shots that night. We went to some clubs afterwards but it was pretty empty. The orientation for 1st years students doesn't start until next week.
We now basically have a week off before classes start. There are still a lot of small things that need to be arranged though before classes so we can't actually really go travel, so mostly we're just relaxing and exploring the Stellenbosch area. Sunday we had a braai at our house and I invited some international students as well. Appearantly it's illegal to sell alcohol on a Sunday in South Africa, which we didn't know. Luckily I live with locals and they knew of some illegal liquorstore in a shady part of town. After being instructed properly on what to do and what not to do, we tried to go and find it (it moves every now and again, for obvious reasons). We found it but they only had wine and champagne. It was about time I started drinking wine anyway. Appearantly there's more alcohol in wine than there is in beer (which I honestly didn't really know). I finished 3 bottles and had a hell of a time. As always we just ended up i. the pool drinking and eating meat, I'm really starting to love Stellenbosch.
Something else that has really surprised me is the taste of music of the men in Stellenbosch. I don't care much for buildings or 'touristic hot spots' in foreign countries, but I do really enjoy seeing these kind of small cultural differences. Appearantly the Stellenbosch men are really into girlish music. First someone started playing Call Me Maybe and everybody was like 'oooeeeh nice' and starting shouting along. Of course this song has been on the radio so much that even I knew the lyrics, so that didn't really say anything yet. Maybe they were just being ironic. In the next hour though all the guys also sang along with Taylor Swift and what's her name, that ex of Justin Bieber. Nothing wrong with that of course, but it just really surprised me as literally everybody here looks like either a tall blonde surfer or a big-ass rugby player.
Wednesday we went for a wine tasting. They've got about 400 local winefarms around Stellenbosch, it's actually one of the top 3 wine producing area's in the world. We went to a fancy one, so we had to pay like 60 Rand (4 euro's) for 8 glasses of wine and 8 goat cheeses to go with them. Wine tastings over here are so cheap that even locals go for one pretty much every weak. I'm actually starting to enjoy wine and I didn't hate some of the cheeses either. My mom'll be so proud of me. Seems like my french blood is finally starting to settle, apart from being an arrogant pig of course. That's been there for a while.
